This is a history museum first. It opened in 1980 in the old Alajuela jail and is devoted to the National Campaign of 1856 to 1857 against the filibuster invasion, with a remit that also covers cultural life in Alajuela.
Its temporary-exhibition pages show visual art as well: sculpture by a collective of sculptors formed at an art school, and a textile project. Entry is free, and it opens Tuesday to Sunday, as printed on its home page.

El 9 de abril de 1980, el Museo abrió sus puertas a la comunidad local y nacional, en el edificio de la antigua cárcel de la ciudad de Alajuela. Este Museo es el único en el país especializado en el tema de la Campaña Nacional de 1856-1857 contra la invasión filibustera.Our translation On 9 April 1980 the museum opened in the former Alajuela city jail.
