Our method How listings are chosen

An artist, gallery, museum or program is listed only when a current page we may quote gives enough detail for a real profile: what the venue is and does, or the artist's practice, training and exhibitions. Allowed sources are the artist's or venue's own website and institution pages, such as museum directories, museum exhibition pages and ministry pages. Commercial galleries' pages about artists they sell, press articles, Wikipedia and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Reddit) are never sources. Artists who publish mainly on social media are therefore missing, however well known.

Inclusion is defined, never inferred. An artist is listed when a source states at least one of three things: born in Costa Rica, living in Costa Rica, or having exhibited in Costa Rica. Each profile shows those three as separate claims, quoted, and marks the ones our sources don't state. A venue's town is shown only where the venue prints its public location. Artists have no town or province in the directory, because none of our sources documents a public studio, and a birthplace is never used as a location.

Every fact on a profile is a quote, with a link to the page it comes from and the date our check last found it there. Spanish quotes stay in Spanish, with our English translation beside them, labeled as ours. The "Our reading" box on each page is our plain-language summary of those quotes; it adds no facts, ranks nothing and names no other listing. Media tags appear only where a quote on the profile names that medium.

Exhibitions appear on the calendar only when the organizer's own page prints both dates with the year. Your browser works out whether each is upcoming, within its dates or closed from today's date in Costa Rica. We show no opening times, fees or tickets beyond what the source prints.

A short list of rules we keep for rights: no artwork images, photographs or logos are reproduced (we link to the source instead), each quote is only the excerpt needed, and each publisher's terms were read before quoting, as listed below. This site replaced an unused 2010 blog at this address; nothing from it was kept.

How we check

Before every build, a script fetches each source page again and confirms that every quote still appears on it word for word; a quote that has changed or disappeared doesn't publish. It identifies itself as CostaRicaArtistsSourceCheck with a link to this page, obeys each site's robots.txt, waits at least 3 seconds between requests to the same site, and treats a refusal as final. Last check: October 19, 2026, 65 pages, 303 quotes. Exhibitions are rechecked monthly.

Corrections and removal

If something here is wrong or out of date, or you are listed and want your profile changed or removed, tell us below. Include the page and, for a correction, a link to a current page that shows the right information. We fix errors against the artist's or venue's own pages and institution records. Removal requests from the artist or venue are honored.
